Dear

As a registered voter I urge you to use your considerable influence to the support FCC Comissioner Martin in requiring cable and satellite industries to offer consumers " a la carte" choices. Specifically the provisions below should be required. If this can not be done by FCC regulation, then I urge Congress to make a law requiring " a la carte" choice and prohibit the forced bundling of multiple TV channels by television programmers &/or distributors for delivery by cable, satellite, or over the air Direct To Home TV (DTH).

  1. Prohibit program providers from requiring that cable, satellite, or over the air Direct To Home TV (DTH) distributors carry certain program channels in order to obtain permission to carry other more popular channels.
  2. Prohibit program providers from requiring that cable, satellite, or over the air Direct To Home TV (DTH) distributors to carry certain programs in one market in order to carry programs in a different market.
  3. Require cable, satellite, or over the air Direct To Home TV (DTH) providers to provide a a la carte" choice of all its channels at a price that is reasonable and justified based on actual costs. This should NOT preclude the additional choice of themed packages, or for that matter mega-everythig packages.

The Wall Street Journal opened their excellent March 26, 2004 article describing the problem with the following:

When Sen. John McCain goes shopping, the grocery store doesn't make him buy broccoli if he's buying milk. Why then, the powerful head of the Senate Commerce Committee wonders, do cable and satellite-TV companies make people pay for channels they don't watch, say for example, ESPN?

Instead of forcing consumers to buy a prix-fixe menu of channels, the Arizona Republican is pushing for a la carte service, or individual channels in lieu of traditional packages. And the idea is gaining popularity

(NOTE: If you would like more information concerning this problem, go to : http://freechoicetv.tripod.com/action/index.html )

I urge you to contact the appropriate committees and urge that a la carte choices be provided to Americas families.

Sincerely,
